The Long Way Home

“…God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter” (v.17).

“…God will surely come to your aid…”(v.19).

By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so they could travel by day or night (v.21). – Exodus 13:17-22 (NIV)

God has His reasons for the strange paths He sometimes leads us to. And if He doesn’t take us the shortest way, we can rest in the knowledge that the experience is ultimately for our good and will give Him glory. As we are reminded, “His way is perfect” (Psalm 18:30).

As I reflect on being a new driver, going to point A to point B is complex, especially to places I have never been before. My unfamiliarity with the road sometimes led me to commit mistakes in traffic laws. Things got more manageable when I discovered the Waze app, which points me to places I desire. But using the app still requires good navigation skills to help direct me to the correct exit or entry at the right time and warn me of traffic signs or signals.

This passage encouraged me to always pray for God’s leading in my life. I should constantly be reminded that the Lord intentionally takes me to difficult paths and longer routes for my faith (just like the skills in driving) to be exercised and strengthened. Moreover, through His Word, He leads us along the way. And that He is the Navigator that leads us to our destination — Heaven. We must trust and obey Him.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank you that in the midst of it all, we can look for the assurance of Your presence. Thank you that we have the Holy Spirit to comfort, strengthen, and guide us. May You lead us, Lord, along the way You perfectly prepared for us. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
