Giving Our Best to Our Job and God

“Then Jesus said to them, ‘Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.’ And they were amazed at Him.” – Mark 12:17 NIV

This passage was originally about paying taxes to the government versus giving to God. However, I believe the same principle applies to giving what is due to our employer and our jobs and what is due to our God and His work.

With the many tasks to do as a church leader, I am tempted to use some of my time at work to do some church-related tasks whenever I can. But as I reflect on this passage, I am reminded to give my all for my work during official working hours and do my best to work on church-related tasks after official working hours.

Why? Because this is a way to honor my God-given job, and it will give glory to God when my employer recognizes my accomplishments and when my colleagues see that I am honest with how I use my time for my work. Also, I should not cause others to work on ministry tasks by not sending messages during official working hours.

I pray that all of us are good witnesses for Christ not just in how we use our time but also in using the resources in our workplace (e.g., not using office supplies and materials for personal and ministry purposes).
